Dolly Parton, born Jan. 19, 1946 in Locust Ridge Tenn. to a family of 12 poor children who would grow up with them eventually. She learned early on how to conquer of the difficulties she faced with her incredibly vivid imagination. Her songs were written before she was able to read or write. Her first guitar was given by her mother when she was eight. She started singing at the Knoxville Tenn station by the age of eleven. The first album she recorded was in the same calendar year with Gold Band Records, a tiny independent label. Her name was made for herself locally while still at high school, but dreamed of a bigger stage. The year 1964 was the day after her high school graduation the singer moved to Nashville. Her first charting records on Monument Records included Dumb Blonde and Something Fishy both in 1967. Around this time, Porter Wagoner was looking for an actress to sing for the show he had syndicated to television. Parton was hired in the year 1967 she signed with RCA Records by 1968, and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. She quit Wagoner's act in 1974 when her solo singles like Joshua Coat of Many Colors and Jolene beat out the collaborations.
